After many legal troubles and nearly being forced to retire Sad Café came back in 1985 with the polished pop of "Politics of Existing". 1982s' "Olé" marked a change for Sad Cafe, adding in more pop radio friendly numbers while retaining their affection for American rock. "Olé" was definitely a transitional effort with many numbers being semi-forgettable (with a few exceptions). However, "Politics of Existing" finds the band back and in top form. 1985's "Politics of Existing" instead blends many new wave influences of the time with Sad Café's signature love of R&B. Tracks like "I Didn't Want You" and "Refugees" rely heavily on keyboard sampling and mid 80's production values, such as electronic drums and endless synth washes. It could be argued that this dates the album, but God it sounds good. After riding the success of Mike + The Mechanics, Paul Young seems incredibly invested with the material throughout the record, from the flamenco flavors of "Midnite" to the jazzy blitz of "Clocks". The rest of the band is also in top form, Ian Wilson's guitars ring over Miffy Smith's keyboards perfectly as the rest of the band follow suite. The rest of the record meets the standards of the standouts tracks also. Tracks like "Heart" and "Keep Us Together" are noticeably more top 40 adult contemporary focused, but with the genuine energy of the band it's alright. See, there is such a thing as good adult contemporary. While one could argue time has not been kind to this record, specifically in the synth department, the sheer energy transcends times cruelty to late 80's pop music.Final Rating-8/10Stand-Out Tracks-"I Didn't Want You", "Trying To Reach You", "Saving Grace" and "Refugees"
