Absent I Am - Music for Tudor Kings Henry VII and Henry VIII - Hilliard Ensemble - New London Consort.
Hilliard-Ensemble · Mitglieder Des New London Consort - Popular Music From The Time Of Henry VIII (Album).
An early music ensemble is a musical ensemble that specializes in performing early music of the European classical tradition from the Baroque era and earlier - broadly, music produced before about 1750.
The Hilliard Ensemble, formed in 1974, took a great leap forward in the investigation and performance of English Renaissance music. It took its name not from baritone and leader Paul Hillier but from that of an Elizabethan portraitist, Nicholas Hilliard. These discs cover a couple of generations' worth of English madrigals and other songs, interspersed with instrumental works and a few songs from other countries. Overall, the performances hold up better than many others from the early days of early music. A quick piece like Cornysh's Hoyda Hoyda Jolly Rutterkin (a rutterkin is a beguiler, in case you were wondering) comes through as an impenetrable mass of vibrato.

The Hilliard Ensemble is one of the world's finest vocal chamber groups, and is probably unrivalled for its formidable reputation in the fields of both early and new music. Its distinctive style and highly developed musicianship engage the listener as much in medieval and renaissance repertoire as in works specially written for the group by living composers. The group's reputation as an early music ensemble dates from the 1980's and its series of highly successful records for EMI (many of which are now re-released on Virgin), but from the start the group has paid equal attention to new music. Their 1988 recording of Arvo Pärt's Passio began a fruitful relationship with both Pärt and the Munich-based record company ECM. This continued with their recording of Arvo Pärt's Litany, which was released in August '96.
Josquin was a northerner who, like so many other composers of the Renaissance, descended to Italy to pursue his career. The singers bring to life the composer's marriage of the Flemish preoccupation with technique and the southern instinct toward lyricism. Renews automatically.
