Yo Miles! (CD - Shanachie 5046). Like the career of Miles Davis himself - and, in particular, the part of his career to which this two-disc set pays homage - this album presents a maddeningly uneven collection of material and performances, ranging from intense and lovely elaborations on Davis' original themes to numbingly tedious and overlong expositions of others.

Yo Miles! Sky Garden (CD2) (2004). Discography: Wadada Leo Smith. The Great Lakes Suites (CD2) (2014). The Great Lakes Suites (CD1) (2014).

Following their highly-acclaimed second Yo Miles! release, Sky Garden (Cuneiform, 2004), trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and guitarist Henry Kaiser return for a third time to the wellspring of Miles Davis' electric period of '69-75. Of course the same could be said for Wadada Leo Smith himself; with a background in free music and through-composed composition that is closer in aesthetic to contemporary classical music, one would never have imagined him to be such a good fit. And yet, while his playing demonstrates a richer breadth than Miles', he clearly understands and intuitively reconciles his own playing into this more rhythmically charged homage.

In 1998, Smith and guitarist Henry Kaiser released Yo, Miles!, a tribute to Miles Davis's then-lesser-known 1970s electric period. On this album, Smith, Kaiser and a large cast of musicians recorded cover versions and original compositions inspired by Miles's electric music. The follow-ups Sky Garden (released by Cuneiform in 2004) and Upriver (released in 2005) were recorded with a different cast of musicians. Both line-ups featured Michael Manring on bass.

This is a musical tribute that lived up to its mission. So many tributes (the myriad Hendrix tributes come to mind) are nothing more than opportunities for record companies and producers to pimp the dead. The tributes often sound like "wham bam thank you ma'am" payday sessions. Covers without interpretation. Fortunately this set harkens back to the days covering a tune (or music) meant interpreting the spirit and extending it with a unique twist. This band goes deep into the Miles Running the Voodoo Down period (On the Corner through Agatha/Pangea). Murky and muscular lead lines and rhythms. The co-leaders use Miles Davis and Pete Cosey as their launching points and blast off from there. Great music here for a period of Miles' production that is getting the due it deserves. It was that Black shit that mugs might've been scared of at the time. Well here it is with no apologies.
