Christmas Portrait is the first Christmas album and ninth studio album by American music duo Carpenters, released on October 13, 1978. The album includes a revised version of the group's signature Christmas song, "Merry Christmas Darling". It also includes one of two versions of "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" (a slower version, recorded in 1974, as well as other unused songs recorded during this album's sessions, were issued on the Carpenters' later Christmas album, An Old-Fashioned Christmas).

Christmas Portrait is the first Christmas album recorded by Carpenters, and the only one issued during Karen Carpenter’s lifetime. Originally released on 13 October 1978, it charted on 9 December 1978 and would go on to be the N. Christmas album of that year. After The Carpenters At Christmas TV special aired on 9 December 1977, the sibling duo decided it was finally the time to record a Christmas album

Actually, for a change on a Carpenters album, Richard is the dominant personality on display across this record, as both co-arranger and producer, as well as the mastermind behind the project; Karen Carpenter's voice is also prominent, to be sure, most notably on "Merry Christmas, Darling" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and she threw herself into this. next-to-last completed project (and their final release before a two-year hiatus), but it's Richard who comes to the fore everywhere here, in ways that are impossible to ignore
