The excellence and prestige of the Philipstreble clef graphic Great Pianists of the 20th Century series demanded a successor, and logically this is it, since so many superstar performers of the last century were conductors who collectively shaped the course of classical music. Any serious attempt to compile a project of such daunting scope demands instant respect and attention. Great Conductors of the 20th Century is a joint venture between the production and licensing expertise of IMG Artists and the international marketing and distribution clout of EMI. Sixty volumes were planned with hopes.

In 1927, he was engaged as director of the Kroll Opera House in Berlin, where he remained until 1931 when political pressures and financial difficulties forced its closure. In addition to better-known operas, Klemperer introduced new works which ran counter to the Nazis' idealized view of German culture, such as Schoenberg's Die glückliche Hand and Erwartung; Hindemith's two operas, Cardillac and Neues von Tag; and Janacek's From the House of the Dead.

Poco moderato - Poco allegro - Allegro. Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber, for orchestra. Composed By – Paul Hindemith.

The point is whether or not it works. If you love Toscanini's tough guy with a bad attitude and a hair trigger temper, it works just fine. Toscanini's Brahms' Fourth rages against the dying of the light and his "Immolation Scene" is full of sound and fury signifying something or other.

I am currently playing the Toscanini volume. Particularly from watching the two-part DVD documentary on The Art of Conducting ("Great Conductors of the Past" and "Legendary Conductors of a Golden Era"), I have been very much interested in understanding more of what a conductor actually does. I would not dream of pretending that I could fill their slippers, but I am interested into their role and the means by which they achieve it.

For whateer reason-poor sales, less than riveting performances, dubious choices of conductors-the series more or less flopped and was cut short. Thus we have a Great Condcutors survey without Bernstein, Solti, Abbado, and Carlos Kleiber, among others. Whether you are a serious collector of classical music or a beginner, the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" has something for everyone. If the prized, rare performances previously unreleased on CD (or ever!) doesn't excite you, then use this as an opportunity to check out one of the greatest conductors ever recorded.

She taught everyone who was anyone in the 20th century, from Copland to Elliott Carter. When asked by a reporter about being a woman conductor she replied: "I've been a woman for a little over 50 years and have gotten over my initial astonishment. 5. Valery Gergiev (1953-). The brilliant Russian conductor has lead many of the world's great orchestras. Few maestros can make Tchaikovsky sound so good. He is seen here conducting at the close of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. Many conductors today still consider Toscanini the greatest conductor of Verdi who ever lived. Not surprising, really, seeing as he actually began his musical life playing under Verdi himself. Toscanini also gave the première performances of 'La bohème' and 'Turandot', so he's basically a legend.

Bernard Haitink, one of the great conductors of our day, headed the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1961 to 1988, establishing his reputation in the core works of the repertoire. Nikolaus Harnoncourt. One of the great pioneers of the period-instrument movement, Harnoncourt founded his Concentus Musicus Wien in 1953 and, recording extensively, helped create a new audience for this historically informed approach. Sir Georg Solti was one of the most respected and – through his ground-breaking recordings with producer John Culshaw – influential conductors of the 20th century. A pupil of Bartók, Weiner and Dohnányi in Budapest, Solti worked with Toscanini in Salzburg. He headed the opera in Frankfurt before taking over the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
