I feel like I have been called to this from above, and this record is another evidence of that in my life. I can't wait to see the impact it has, the people we will be able to bless in the process. Opilar
A more fierce yet composed Spoken comes alive on Illusion. Where previous albums often wavered a bit in the band's intent, Illusion sees the group orient themselves more appropriately - appealing more to the metal crowd without trying to be a lighter version of Underoath. As a result, you can hear Spoken sounding more metalcore than ever before, and it definitely suits them. "Stand Alone" is a relentless opener, with "Beneath the Surface" carrying that momentum beyond the opening few minutes. Typically, this is where Spoken would lose their edge a bit and, equally, their appeal for me. Instead, "Don't Go", while softer in nature, keeps the good thing going while being more melodical than thrashing. "Through It All" is yet another solid entry for what ends up being a surprisingly-good and meaty album. Spoken are back on my radar after nearly disappearing in years leading up to the release of Illusion.
