Paul Quinichette (May 17, 1916 – May 25, 1983) was an American jazz musician who played the tenor saxophone. He was known as the "Vice President" or "Vice Prez" for his uncanny emulation of the breathy style of Lester Young, known as "Prez". Young, who affectionately called everyone "Lady " (he called Billie Holiday "Lady Day"), called him "Lady Q". He was also capable of a gruffer style on his own.
Twelve of the fifteen selections recorded at tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette's first sessions as a leader were reissued on this late-'70s Trip LP. Quinichette, a near-perfect soundalike of Lester Young in the 1950s, was with Count Basie's new orchestra at the time. Six selections find the tenor joined by Basie himself (on piano and organ) along with such Basie-ites as trumpeter Buck Clayton, trombonist Dickie Wells, guitarist Freddie Green, bassist Walter Page and drummer Gus Johnson
Leader, Saxophone – Paul Quinichette (tracks: ALL). Organ – Bill Doggett (tracks: A1-A4). Organ, Piano – Count Basie (tracks: B1-B6). Paul Quinichette was known as "the Vice Pres" because he sounded so similar to Lester Young ("Pres") during the 1950s. Despite that fault (his lack of originality), Quinichette was quite creative and swinging within Young's style and his recordings were consistently rewarding during the era. On this Verve CD reissue, the music of two full Lps (The Vice Pres and Sequel) are reissued plus six previously unheard alternate takes. Quinichette is heard in a a sextet with both pianist Kenny Drew and organist Bill Doggett, jamming in a nonet arranged by Ernie Wilkins, playing.
