Bass baritone Max van Egmond was 65 when he made this recording, and while he brings nearly half a century of professional experience to the performance, his voice has the bloom and vigor of a singer half his age. His rock-solid technique and his interpretive wisdom make every song in this treacherous cycle a pleasure. The fortepiano's ability to produce a distinctively hollow timbre and van Egmond's nuanced performance make the final song, "Der Leiermann," truly chilling

In fact, Max van Egmond proves himself to be a master interpreter of Schubert's cycle. There's still a certain vigour in the step of the dejected lover in "Gute Nacht", but as the cycle develops and the moods alter he expresses to moving effect the gamut of emotions, through disillusion, anger, jealousy, nostalgia, false hope and Sehnsucht, which give the work its extraordinary character and variety. Throughout the cycle, van Egmond's attention to verbal and musical detail made me aware of the subtle power of the wanderer's interaction with the landscape, his mood changes in response to nature's various manifestations - snow, frost, running water, crow, trees, wind, clouds - as well as to the man-made phenomena of posthorn, weathervane, inn, signpost and the like.
Max van Egmond (born 1 February 1936 in Semarang) is a Dutch bass and baritone singer. He has focused on oratorio and Lied and is known for singing works of Johann Sebastian Bach. He was one of the pioneers of historically informed performance of Baroque and Renaissance music. Max van Egmond studied voice at Hilversum with Tine van Willingen de Lorme. At the age of eighteen he became a member of De Nederlandse Bachvereniging (Netherlands Bach Society).
