While Charles attended Carnegie Tech he founded the Charles Bell Contemporary Jazz Quartet. The jazz ensemble made its debut appearance in a concert at the Carnegie Lecture Hall in October of 1958 performing Charles Bell's original compositions. The members of the quartet for that initial performance were vibraphonist Chuck Leroy, bassist Dicker Hiller and drummer Cecil Brooks. Allen Blairman replaced Brooks on drums later in 1958. The Charles Bell Quarter won the Intercollegiate Jazz Festival in 1960. The quartet was comprised of Charles Bell on piano, Bill Smith on guitar, bassist Mike Trafficante, and Allen Blairman on drums. They were named the winner by a jury Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Jack Plies and John Hammond Jr.

Formed in 1958, Charles Bell’s Quartet made its recording debut on Columbia with “The Charles Bell Contemporary Jazz Quartet” after being acclaimed at the 1960 Georgetown University Intercollegiate Jazz Festival. The group—all extremely proficient musicians who knew how exploit the potentialities of their instruments to the fullest —was something new in jazz, with an approach to theme, variation and rhythmic pulse that seemed to set it apart. Charles Bell (1933-2012) was a classically trained pianist of undeniably lush and harmonic abilities. Bill Smith contributed impressively to the singular contrapuntal interplay between piano and guitar, while bassist Ron Carter, a very good soloist, provided a solid rhythmic fulcrum, with Allen Blairman a tasteful and intelligent drummer. ~ ☮HЯ
