Masters of the Piano Roll: Mahler Plays Mahler. Symphonic Dance No. 1. Gustav Mahler. Irish Dances (4) for piano (or orchestra), Op.

Gustav Mahler represents one of the keenest losses to early classical recordings. Despite his present fame as the last of the great German symphonic composers, during his lifetime Mahler was better known as a profoundly influential conductor. His obsessive intensity on the podium fueled headstrong, expressive performances of huge individuality. Reproduction is achieved not through a player piano, but with a so-called "vorsetzer" unit, which actually plays a concert grand using felt-tipped "fingers" activated by varying degrees of pneumatic pressure triggered by the sets of holes. The result is uncannily realistic and far superior to the limited range of the acoustic disc in conveying the "touch" of an artist. Except for a slight pumping background sound of the pneumatic bellows, the present disc has the full nuance of a genuine performance.

Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) was an Austrian composer and a master of the symphony, who thought "The symphony must be like the world; it must embrace everything". For others the effect is nauseating. It was as a conductor that Mahler was most celebrated during his own lifetime. During his tenure at the Vienna Opera, Mahler presided over a remarkable 52 new productions of established repertoire, and introduced 32 new works, including Puccini's La Boheme and Madam Butterfly. Did you know? The Austrian composer Gustav Mahler discovered a piano in his grandmother's attic when he was six years old. Just four years later, he gave his first public performance.

The musical compositions of Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) are almost exclusively in the genres of song and symphony. In his juvenile years he attempted to write opera and instrumental works; all that survives musically from those times is a single movement from a Piano Quartet from around 1876–78. From 1880 onwards Mahler was a professional conductor whose composing activities had to be fitted around concert and theatrical engagements.

In 1905 Gustav Mahler himself sat down at the keyboard of a Welte Mignon system and produced four piano rolls of four of his own compositions.

Strictly speaking, these are piano rolls rather than a sound recording of Mahler. I have these on a CD release (produced by Gilbert Kaplan) that includes additional tracks where a singer sings over Mahler's performances. The sleeve notes remark that "Fewer than ten copies of the Mahler rolls were sold in the early years, when he was mostly known as a conductor and his music was rarely performed. In addition, Welte's initial prices were very high. Apparently the roll with the 5th symphony extract cost 4. marks in 1909, which the notes say was equivalent.
