Skyhook Whit Dickey: drums Rob Brown: alto sax, flute Chris Lightcap: bass This is Whit Dickey's first album as a leader. In 1996, Whit parted ways with the stunning groups of both David S. Ware and Matthew Shipp, of which he was full part and parcel for a number of years. After a period of reassessment, Whit was inspired anew by aligning himself with his burgeoning compositional urges. Whit Dickey's addictive sense of time is ON, and his dancerly touch up top of the kit is wholly meshed with his full-bodied low end drive. Rob Brown – one of any generation's most gifted alto sax improvisors – burns like an anxious mofo when he is driven, and he is burning all through this album.
Transonic is the debut album by American jazz drummer Whit Dickey, which was recorded in 1997 and released on AUM Fidelity. For his first record as leader, Dickey went into the studio with long-time associate, saxophonist Rob Brown, and then relative newcomer to the scene, bassist Chris Lightcap. He notes that many of the cuts were inspired by two Thelonious Monk compositions, "Off Minor" & "Criss Cross", along with the magic of tenor saxophonist David S. Ware.
Whit Dickey (born May 28, 1954, New York City) is a free jazz drummer. He has recorded albums as a bandleader, with David S. Ware, Matthew Shipp and others. Free jazz drummer Whit Dickey first stepped into the spotlight as a leader with the release of his Transonic album from Aum Fidelity in 1998. Two years later, Wobbly Rail issued his Big Top release. Previously, he was best known for his solid work with Matthew Shipp and David S. Ware, with whom Dickey split in 1996
One does not normally look to a drummer-led jazz session for innovative compositions, but Whit Dickey (best-known for his work with David S. Ware) demonstrates a remarkable writing talent on his first record as a leader, Transonic. The best tunes on the record, like "Planet One," "Volleys," and "Skyhook," feature concise, Thelonius Monk-like hooks articulated in a delightfully scrambling fashion by the trio of Dickey on drums, Rob Brown on alto saxophone and flute, and Chris Lightcap on bass
