Of the 24 works by Orlande de Lassus recorded here, 15 are claimed to be receiving their premiere recordings. Right off, that makes this fine set of performances worthwhile; Lassus' output was enormous (some 2,000 pieces), and large parts of it remain untouched by all but scholars. Yet the contributions this album makes only begin with the novelty of the repertory. The music was recorded on the choir's home ground at St. John's College Chapel, and the results are audible in the form of good text intelligibility and pleasant sonic warmth.

More than 2000 of his pieces survive: Latin settings of masses, canticles, motets, passions, litanies and hymns, as well as secular music in Italian, French and German. The selections on this recording, many world premieres, represent only a fraction of his enormous output: a small sample that shows a composer whose formidable technique, kaleidoscopic ear for texture and matchless word settings made him the darling of the musical High Renaissance in Western Europe.

Choir of St John's College, Cambridge, His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts, Nethsingha (Chaconne). Lassus (c 1534) was a celebrity musician in his day, moving between his native Low Countries to Rome and Munich. At least 2,000 of his masses, canticles, motets and hymns have survived. He was also bipolar, then called "melancholia hypochondriaca". This may or may not explain the harmonic adventure which leaps out of his prodigiously inventive compositions, from the exotic sensuality of Veni in horum meum to the spiky moral indignation of Quid gloriaris in malitia
