Jay Leonhart (born December 6, 1940) is a double bassist, singer, and songwriter who has worked in jazz and popular music. He has performed with Judy Garland, Bucky Pizzarelli, Carly Simon, Frank Sinatra, and Sting. Leonhart is noted for his clever songwriting, often laced with dry humor. His compositions have been recorded by Blossom Dearie, Lee Konitz, and Gary Burton. His poetry is published both in, and outside of, the venue of song.

Jay Leonhart drew inspiration early in his musical life from the Oscar Peterson Trio (with Ray Brown and Herb Ellis), which serves somewhat as a model for this trio date. With pianist Ted Rosenthal and guitarist Joe Cohn, they put together a delightful set, sharing the solo spotlight and playing superb backgrounds for one another.

Jay Leonhart Trio Cool Sons of Sound 2004. Leonhart says that the music from his new album Cool gets hot, and he's right. It has music taken from films, musical plays and jazz classics. The experienced bassist, who started in music at seven playing banjo and guitar, is a real entertainer and shows us the amiable and comical face of jazz. Choosing the best pieces from this album is complicated, most of them are performed magnificently, but the first four tracks of the album are the most effervescent. The Opening "Take Four", makes people quit angry faces and smile. It was composed by Al Cohn and it appeared for the first time in his 1981 album Nonpareil. Piano, bass and guitar play at unison, at certain moments of the piece. Afterward there is a subtle scat by Leonhart.
