Zemlinsky: A Florentine Tragedy mp3 download

A Florentine Tragedy is a fragment of a never-completed play by Oscar Wilde. The subject concerns Simone, a wealthy 16th-century Florentine merchant who finds his wife Bianca in the arms of a local prince, Guido Bardi. After feigning hospitality, Simone challenges the interloper to a duel, disarms him, and strangles him. This awakens the affection of his wife; and the two are reconciled.

The music of Viennese composer Alexander Zemlinsky often lies somewhere between that of his romantic rival Mahler and Arnold Schoenberg, but the model for the one-act opera Eine florentinische Tragödie, A Florentine Tragedy, is clear: it bears a strong family resemblance to Richard Strauss' Salome.

All three parties to the doomed love triangle are supremely well-sung, especially Wotan-du-jour Albert Dohmen, in even better voice than he was for Decca’s studio mics. The Maeterlinck songs make a generous bonus, rapturously sung by Petra Lang. Excellent live recordings.

July 2014's release on the LPO Label was a disc of Zemlinsky's A Florentine Tragedy and Six Maeterlinck Songs conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. The disc also features soloists Petra Lang (mezzo soprano), Heike Wessels (mezzo soprano), Sergei Skorokhodov (tenor) and Albert Dohmen (baritone). Zemlinsky colours, punctuates and informs the drama with orchestral material and Jurowski and the LPO certainly make this count. The orchestra is on terrific form, really bringing Zeminsky's rich sound world and Secessionist harmonies to lif. his is a fascinating disc with a pair of highly dramatic and still neglected works. Whatever you think about the ultimate worth of Zemlinsky's music, these performances cry out to be listened t. Robert Hugill, Planet Hugill, 16 July 2014.
