Hermann Goetz: Orchestral. has been added to your Basket. Goetz died at age 36, the victim of tuberculosis, and we will never know whether he would have developed into a great composer. Goetz's setting of Schiller's "Naenia" predates Brahms's version and it is noteworthy that Brahms deferred publication of his own masterpiece for some time out of respect for Goetz's superb composition.

German composer, born 7 December 1840 in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia), died 3 December 1876 in Hottingen near Zürich, Switzerland.

Hermann Gustav Goetz (December 7, 1840 – December 3, 1876) was a German composer. Goetz was born in Königsberg, which was then part of East Prussia. After studying in Berlin, he moved to Switzerland in 1863. After ten years spent as a critic, pianist and conductor as well, he spent the last three years of his life composing.

The tragically short-lived Hermann Goetz (1840-1876) made a modest comeback on disc back in the early 1990s when CPO brought out his complete orchestral works, concertos, and piano chamber music. Twenty years later pianist and scholar Christof Keymer offers the most comprehensive possible collection of the composer’s piano music. A 1970s release by Adrian Ruiz on the Genesis label purported to encompass Goetz’s complete piano music, and it was, insofar as it covers the works with opus numbers.
