Orpheus the Lowdown is a sound and word project between avant-songster Peter Blegvad and XTC's Andy Partidge. It's a charming collection of prose pieces and poetry with wild sonics. There's everything here from radio noise to big percussion, dramatic reading by Blegvad, who phrases a lot like either Kenneth Patchen or Ken Nordine depending on the piece. There isn't anything here that isn't engaging, thought-provoking or downright funny.

Andrew John Partridge (born 11 November 1953) is an English singer, songwriter, and record producer who founded the rock band XTC. He and Colin Moulding each acted as a songwriter and frontman for XTC, with Partridge writing and singing about two-thirds of the group's material. While the band were a formative punk group, Partridge's music drew heavily from British Invasion songwriters, and his style gradually shifted to more traditional pop, often with pastoral themes

Originally produced in 2004 and written by Peter Blegvad and Andy Partridge over an 11-year period, the CD completes the Orpheus legend where most re-imaginings have failed. Instead of focusing on Orpheus’s relationship with Eurydice, the story becomes simply one part of a larger examination of Orpheus’s mythical singing ability. Taken as an entire package, Orpheus: The Lowdown combines everything about previous stories centered around Orpheus in the arts: music, spoken and written word and paintings. This unique way of telling a story - reinforcing ideas with different media - comes across.

And here, in the footsteps of Virgil and Ovid, inspired by Rilke and Steiner, come Peter Blegvad and Andy Partridge, former luminaries of Slapp Happy and XTC respectively, with a mini-album glossing the story of the minstrel of Thrace, the son of Apollo and Calliope, whose lyre could move the very stones and charm a passage through the gates of Hades. Another day dawns on the savannah," Blegvad begins, his perfectly modulated tones emerging from the first of a series of striking soundscapes. The wind sighs in the antlers of a few static deer, a coyote howls. Fulfilling the gods' command to build a city in a day, Orpheus threatens to short-circuit the power supply on Olympus. As Eurydice fades back into the underworld, her lover takes a bullet from an unknown shooter.
