Pierre Monteux (1875-1964) recorded a complete stereo cycle of the 9 Beethoven Symphonies 1957-62, near the end of his life and career, well into his 80s. Symphonies 1,3,6 and 8 were with the Vienna Philharmonic; 2,4,5 and 7 with the London Symphony. All were released on LP by RCA in the early 1960s. I remember having 6 "Pastoral " on a London Treasury LP in 1973. These performances feature a combination of Gallic elegance (Monteux) with the forthright, straightforward London Symphony
