Anchor by Zammuto, released 02 September 2014 1. Good Graces 2. Great Equator 3. Hegemony 4. Henry Lee 5. Need Some Sun 6. Don't Be a Tool 7. Electric Ant 8. Io 9. Stop Counting 10. Sinker 11. Your Time 1. It was in many ways the most essential album of his career, in that it established his post-Books path and introduced him to a new group of musicians (most notably renowned percussionist Sean Dixon) who have immeasurably contributed to the creative inspiration and execution of his most compelling work to date, the aptly titled Anchor. An enormous weight has been lifted from Nick Zammuto, and you can hear as much in the opening minutes of Anchor.

Otherwise, Anchor lacks excitement and Zammuto’s trademark ingenuity. He sounds uninspired and bored, with arrangements that rustle unhurriedly and a sense of stiff formalism reminiscent of Andrew Bird collaborator Martin Dosh’s conservatory-school post-rock solo work. Even in Zammuto’s and his former band’s most uninspired moments, their music sounded like little else out there. Anchor’s quiet, indifferent drift is disappointing, but the album’s biggest misstep, paradoxically, is also its boldest cut: "IO", which pairs flatulent bass with a swaggering vocal performance from Zammuto and a drum beat befitting Eddie Money.

Formerly from the Books and supported by Gotye, Nick Zammuto’s band’s second album is not one to overlook at all. His percussion- and synth-driven experimental music is something to get used to, but once you do that, you’ll keep enjoying it. Highlights are Great Equator, Hegemony, Don’t Be a Tool and Sinker.

Label: Temporary Residence Limited ‎– TRR227. A lot of effort has gone into the artwork for this album. I don't know how they did it, but the sound from this coloured vinyl can easily stand-up to black vinyl ECM-recordings.
