Johnny Keating was born in Edinburgh in 1927, the son of a street bookmaker. The family had little money, and largely through his own initiative he taught himself piano accordion, piano and trombone and played in local bands. After military service, he played trombone with the Tommy Sampson Orchestra, mostly in Leith and Edinburgh, before joining Ted Heath and his Music in 1952. In 1956 Heath went on a US tour and as Keating was not on stage, he remained in New York and heard Duke Ellington and Woody Herman; Herman invited him to write arrangements. When he came back to the UK, he told the New Musical Express that there were two schools of big band jazz, on the East Coast and the West Coast, adding that "we should start a third front in London and not slavishly copy the American model".

The jazz albums listed below are among the greatest ever recorded. Mostly selected from the golden "modern" jazz music era of 1940's to the 1970's, these recordings captured the great passion and emotion that these musicians spent a lifetime developing. Kind Of Blue - Miles Davis While it is one of the top selling jazz albums of all time, many consider this to be THE best jazz album of all time. A Love Supreme - John Coltrane This album completely revolutionized the jazz scene in 1965 and even today its influence can be found in many musical styles. The four songs on this album convey emotions of anger, joy, sadness, ecstasy, tragedy and triumph.
Posed with the question, Who invented jazz album cover design? Most people will instantly say, Blue Note Records, and Reid Miles in particular. But this would be a gross simplification as well as inaccurate. Perhaps most ironic of all, given that Blue Note album sleeves have become the benchmark against which all modern jazz covers – and those of just about any other album – are measured, Miles was not a jazz fan, but a classical-music lover. Yet perhaps it was his distance from the music that was also his strength, allowing him to approach the design unencumbered by all but the basic details – the album title, the feel of the music, and something about the session. Warhol produced three Kenny Burrell album sleeves along with one for Johnny Griffin. In later years, Miles would design covers for Bob Dylan, Chicago, Neil Diamond, and Cheap Trick.
