Debussy - Pelleas et Melisande. amp;frags pl%2Cwn VPO/Abbado - score OK not best singing. I haven't heard Inghelbrecht mono on Testament or Ansermet's first mono version - they're two I want to sample. I have been quite enjoying de Billy's video apart from the rather strange set. Not an opera that's exactly easy to stage.

Yet between the wars it was Désiré-Emile Inghelbrecht, a close friend of Debussy, who was regarded as the pre-eminent Pelléas conductor. Inghelbrecht never made a commercial recording of the work, but in 1951 he conducted a studio performance with the Philharmonia in London that was broadcast by the BBC. His cast includes a fascinatingly complex Golaud from Bertrand Etcheverry (who also sang the role for Désormière) and Camille Maurane and Suzanne Danco as Pelléas and Mélisande, both of whom went on to make studio recordings with Ernest Ansermet.
