Burning Man is an event held annually in the western United State at Black Rock City, a temporary city erected in the Black Rock Desert of northwest Nevada, approximately 100 miles (160 km) north-northeast of Reno. The late summer event is an experiment in community and art, influenced by ten main principles: radical inclusion, radical self-reliance, radical self-expression, communal effort, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy and leave no trace.
In short, Burning Man could be described as an annual festival, bridging the last week in August and the first in September, in which 70,000 people gather in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, assemble and inhabit a giant city throughout the course of a week, and then burn the centerpiece effigy of a wooden Man. With the festival’s conclusion, the playa is left as it was found – devoid of architectural structures, material waste or, in fact, any trace of human activity.
The first Burning Man was constructed in 1986 on San Francisco’s Baker Beach at the modest height of eight feet, destined to be burned in celebration of the summer solstice. The Burning Man grew every consecutive year by ten feet for the next three years, eventually reaching the height of 40 feet. After an encounter with the police, in 1990 the Burning Man was relocated and rescheduled to its current date and time: Labor Day Weekend in Western Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. The relocation of the Burning Man to the Nevada desert signaled the inception of two enduring principles of the event
