Alchemic Heart comprises two collaborative pieces, one titled ‘Sea’ with the American avant-gard musician Jarboe, and the other, ‘Land,’ with the Japanese master of sculpted sound, Merzbow. The tracks are equal in structure, mood and duration. On ‘Sea’, Jarboe’s spoken vocals plus sampled vocalizing steer the mood while on ‘Land,’ Merzbow employs vocal samples and an array of sounds for the same purpose.

Jarboe - Primary Artist
The sonic canvas of Alchemic employs captivating blends of trance, rock, ambient and industrial to present its healing theme in a set of striking atmospheres. Introducing the theme is the Tonglen meditation with its splendid melody borne on strings, piano and wordless vocals, culminating in a recital of the meditative technique. The softer pieces impress with their delicacy, like track two, ‘Just for Today’, whose motif recurs on the fifth piece, ‘You’re Here.’ They sway in a dreamy ambiance of acoustic guitars, strings and keyboards on gentle rolling beats. Flutes and trumpets lend the music a magical quality, to which jangling guitars are added in track four, ‘Ascending Now’.Many modes of intricacy colour the musical texture, from tonal sequencing through multiple voices and harmonic layering to interactive rhythmic patterns. These modalities have always been central to Jarboe’s music, from early Swans and World of Skin through her solo albums such as Anhedoniac and collaborations like Blackmouth, Beautiful People Limited and Dark Consort .Polyrhythms contribute to the music’s trancelike effect on the more experimental pieces. The seventh, ‘Portal’, has a slow pulse of emphatic guitar chords interacting with rattling, fast paced percussion. A wired mood emerges on the third, ‘Groundless Humility’ where Jarboe’s chanting operates in a matrix of chimes and massed guitars progressing through thunderous drone and talking drum sequences.Roaring guitars, base booms, dissonance and feedback place the sixth track, ‘Joyful Sorrow’, closest to traditional hard rock, as it unfolds with keyboards curling around and soaring above the wall of sound. Metallic beats, rhythmic infusions of ringing bells and treated vocals make track number eight, ‘Jump Into The Fire,’ an industrial tour de force of potent hypnotic effect.A large body of Jarboe’s work exists outside of traditional song structures, but the tuneful quality of these pieces stand out. Alchemic is remarkable on many levels, including the cohesion maintained throughout its rich array of styles, but above all for the beautiful melodies which linger after the last notes have faded.
ALCHEMIC's stylistic continuum encompasses elements of ambient, art rock, electro, psychedelia, psych folk and industrial dance. Finely crafted atmospheres – in which innovative vocal arrangements set the tone – surround the mantras and meditations on this inspiring work. Two song strains are present: lushly orchestrated contemplative pieces and fierce uptempo dance tracks. An example of the first is “I Tonglen”, a gentle strings- and piano-based meditation. Acoustic guitars, flute-like keyboards and dreamy vocals place “II Just for Today”, “V You’re Here” and “IV Ascending Now” in the same category.Guitars, bass, drones, drums and effects drive the faster dance oriented pieces like “III Groundless Humility” and “VI Joyful Sorrow”. Ritual chanting and polyrhythmic percussion add a tribal flavour, while bursts of maniacal laughter perform a rhythmic function on “VIII Jump Into The Fire” with its thudding industrial beats.Processed vocals, whispers and Sprechstimme interact with wordless vocalizing to generate intricate atmospherics. For example, the otherworldly air of “VII Is This a Portal?” is conjured by birdsong, spoken questions and their whispered repetition over a combination of slow strumming, percolating percussion and symphonic keyboard lines. Alchemic is a profoundly spiritual work whose baroque texture raises multiple layers of mood and meaning. The album is rich in the recurring themes and motifs of Jarboe’s oeuvre. “VIII Jump Into the Fire”, for example, mirrors musical themes from 1992’s Beautiful People Ltd and its Warm Liquid Remix EP that also appear on track three (10:58) of the Viscera collaboration with Byla. Aspects of “II Just For Today” and “VII Is This a Portal?” echo elements of the ambient classic “Under Will” and the tone poem “Circles in Red Dirt” from the 1998 album Anhedoniac.
