Released in 1994, Cult Classic is BÖC first "new" studio album since 1988's Imaginos. I say "new" because it is actually a collection of their most popular tunes rerecorded and altered to varying degrees. It could almost be considered the band's fourth live album since it's pretty much the band's live set captured in the studio (though there is quite a bit of overdubbing). The band at this time consisted of the core trio of Eric Bloom, Buck Dharma, Allen Lanier (who returned to the fold after Imaginos) and the rhythm section of Jon Rogers (replacing Joe Bouchard, who departed after Club Ninja) and Chuck Burgi on drums. The big three singles (The Reaper, Godzilla, and Burnin' For You) are performed pretty much verbatim and thus are a little boring. The only major difference here as far as I can tell is Bloom's vocal in Godzilla appears to be mixed higher than Dharma's. But most of the other tracks are quite different: Astronomy is featured as a full eight minute epic similar to the live version from Some Enchanted Evening; Cities On Flame With Rock N' Roll features Eric Bloom's lead vocals and E.T.I. has the awesome live jam section tacked on at the end. On the downside, Harvester Of Eyes appears without the outro, which is sad. All the musicianship is stellar of course and Buck and Eric could still flawlessly imitate themselves twenty years younger. The audio quality of the rerecorded tracks from the B&W albums far outweigh their original studio counterparts and this is the definitive version of Buck's Boogie. But other than that, the neccesity of owning a release like this comes into question, unless you are, like myself, a hardcore fan who wants everything.
