Painting: John William Waterhouse, Echo and Narcissus, 1903, Liverpool Walker Art Gallery. Six Metamorphoses after Ovid Op. 49) is a piece of program music for solo oboe written by Britten in 1951. Each of the titular six metamorphoses is based on a character from Roman mythology and includes an inscription summarizing their story: Pan, who played upon the reed pipe which was Syrinx, his beloved. Phaeton, who rode upon the chariot of the sun for one day and was hurled into the river Padus by a thunderbolt.
Georg Philipp Telemann - Twelve Fantasias for Oboe Solo (orig. for Flute) Benjamin Britten - Six Metamorphoses after Ovid for Oboe Solo, Op. 49. Vilém Veverka - oboe. How many timbres, shades and characters can a melodic instrument express? The repertoire for solo oboe is sparse, yet oboists can boast of a true gem: the inspiration brought to Benjamin Britten by the oboe and the verse of the Roman poet Ovid gave rise to the cycle Six Metamorphoses.

Georg Philipp Telemann (14 March 1681 – 25 June 1767) was a German Baroque composer. About this release: Born in 1681, Georg Philip Telemann would inevitably suffer from comparisons with one of the towering figures of western Classical music, born just four years later: Johann Sebastian Bach. Although after his death Telemann may have been constantly cast into the Leipzig composer’s shadow, during his lifetime he was exalted as Bach’s equal and was considered one of the greatest German composers of the early 18th century.
