Vinyl Confessions is the eighth studio album by American rock band Kansas, released in 1982 (see 1982 in music). It includes "Play the Game Tonight", which broke the Top 20 and is Kansas's third highest-charting single, surpassed only.

And Vinyl Confessions should be considered a classic Kansas album. Play The Game Tonight" has a great hook, but maintains some progressive integrity. And Dave Hope on "Windows" simply drops my jaw as he just powers away on the bass. The music would be okay I guess, especially if it were coming from Hall & Oates or Toto. But for a band like Kansas it seems to be nothing more than the fulfillment of a recording obligation to the record label, which surely planned to leverage whatever reputation the band still had at that point to gain new fans.

Or maybe it was just that it was getting hard to distinguish Kansas from Foreigner and Journey. In any case, Vinyl Confessions was Kansas' first album since their debut not to go gold.

VINYL CONFESSIONS is a transitional Kansas album with John Elefante replacing Steve Walsh on vocals for this and the following record, DRASTIC MEASURES. This change was initially a promising one with "Play The Game Tonight" being one of the strongest Kansas singles in several years. The rest of the album is palatable, but not much better than the tepid AUDIO-VISIONS album. "Chasing Shadows", "Windows" and "Crossfire" are probably the most memorable tunes, but these aren't quite on the level of their prior classics. Kerry Livgren's lyrics chronicle much of the spiritual tug-of-war that was going on in the band during this era, ultimately leading to his own departure.

A Vinyl Review. Seems fitting due to the name of the album. That said, the name and cover art for this album are poor but thankfully that's the only complaint I have with this album. Despite the departure of vocalist, pianist, and songwriter, Steve Walsh, Kansas found itself an equally talented vocalist, pianist, and songwriter in John Elefante who despite not having the chops that Steve had, would prove himself more than worthy on subsequent solo albums but those are for another time. As for the album itself, the band decided to go for a different direction in sound being a mix of early 80s AOR rock bands and that of their previous albums which ultimately works in this album's favor especially due to the spiritual lyrics with the standout songs being the hit single Play the Game Tonight, the jazzy Diamonds and Pearls, Windows, the acoustic Chasing Shadows, and the spiritual prog rock masterpiece that is Crossfire.
