This is a decent ensemble, over all I think I prefer the "Jacksons'ville" album from the same sessions, but this is all decent quality, with some nice blowing from Lucky Thompson on the ballads "Angel Face" and "What's New". This session has interest as an example of Milt Jackson's mid-'50s work in a non-Modern Jazz Quartet context. And despite the many critical assertions that the vibist was restrained by pianist John Lewis' direction, his playing here revealed no marked changed. The overall feel of the group (Lucky Thompson, tenor sax; Hank Jones, piano; Wendell Marshall; bass, Kenny Clarke, drums; Jackson, vibes), however, was somewhat more dynamic than that of The MJQ, as Clarke and Jones generally achieved a greater sense of forward momentum than Connie Kay or Lewis.

Many a critic has stated that they felt Milt Jackson's playing in the Modern Jazz Quartet was frequently somewhat bridled under the more erudite leadership of John Lewis, and while some of his later work - both solo and with other collaborators - may bear this assertion out somewhat, anyone looking for a radical departure from the style of MJQ on this set might be a bit disappointed. True, there are occasional flashes of looser playing here than on a typical MJQ set (mostly courtesy of Kenny Clarke's livelier drum work), but for the most part a listen reveals no great difference from Jackson's work with the famous quartet. That being said, those who appreciate the lush, romantic stylings of a typical MJQ session will find plenty to enjoy here, as will fans of Lucky Thompson, whose tenor sax has a nicely round, full and somewhat smoky tone throughout.

This is one of Milt Jackson's best albums, and a great place to start listening to him. The music has more fire than the music he did with MJQ, and Lucky Thompson is a big reason. Really great stuff.
