Vainberg: Symphony 5; Trumpet Concertos. Symphony No. 5 in F minor, Op. 76. 1. Movement 1. Mieczyslaw Weinberg. Timofei Dokshitser, Kirill Kondrashin.

Timofei Dokshitser (trumpet, 4-5) Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra Kirill Kondrashin (conductor, 1-3) Algis Zhiuraitis (conductor, 4-5). Mieczyslaw Weinberg (more frequently seen in the Russian variant as Moise Vainberg - or ‘Vaynberg’ if you look at the 1980 New Grove) was born in Warsaw, the son of a violinist and composer working in the Polish theatre. The Fifth Symphony has not previously been recorded. The work emerged in 1962 influenced by the first performance, after a long suppression, of Shostakovich's Fourth Symphony. It is dedicated to Kondrashin, a lifelong Vainberg champion, who conducted the premiere of the Shostakovich work and recorded it for Melodiya shortly afterwards. Although their number is relatively modest, Weinberg’s concertos still make for a viable overview of his output.

Concerto For Trumpet And Orchestra In A Flat Major. Concerto-Poem For Trumpet And Orchestra In C Major, Op. 59. Concerto For Trumpet And Orchestra In B Flat Major, Op. 94. Etudes (Allegro Molto).

One, however, cannot ignore the London Symphony and Kondrashin behind the piano concertos. They are right there with the pianist, adding and supporting, providing the necessary tension between the two. The sound is excellent, though, perhaps, too front and center without distance and stage depth.

The outstanding Soviet conductors Kirill Kondrashin and Rudolf Barshai played a significant part in popularizing Weinberg’s works. Many of Weinberg’s composition were performed for the first time by the orchestras founded by the two conductors – the Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. The Fifth Symphony was recorded by Kondrashin in 1975, and the Tenth one by Barshai in 1970.
