Recorded live at the Jazz Piano Workshop of the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival on June 20, 1965. Tracks 1, 5-9, 11-14 and 19 originally issues as The Jazz Piano (RCA Victor LSP-3499). Track 3 originally issued on Duke Eillington - Solos, Duets & Trios (Bluebird CD-2178). The occasion was a piano workshop on a Sunday afternoon at the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival in 1965, obviously a time when giants still walked the earth. The original album contains only ten tunes. This CD reissue contains all 19 performances, newly remixed from the original three-track masters, adding new material from Smith, Williams, Taylor and Bell.

While horn players often get most the glory, jazz pianists include in their ranks some of the music's most important figures: From Fats Waller and Art Tatum to Bud Powell and Bill Evans, the jazz keyboard community has forged some of the most interesting and enjoyable jazz advances since the '20s. Bluebird pays tribute here with a generous selection featuring most of the top names.

Vote up the greatest jazz musicians who play piano. Imagine dancing to the sound of smooth, vibrant jazz music with a pianist pounding on the keys with all his might accompanied by a cello, trumpet, and trombone. The sound is unique and your feet start to move. When jazz music grew to popularity, there hadn't been anything like it before – it became the iconic sound of an era and is still popular today

The history of jazz piano is an interesting one, and it benefits from being told separately from the history of jazz music in general. Since the piano is unique in that it is primarily a percussive instrument that nonetheless can play both melody and harmony, it makes sense that a great deal of pianists' best work is often a solo affair. Red, along with Big Joe Williams, was one of the first artists to attract listeners to the Delmark label.

Helped by reinforcements from labels like Delmark and Savoy, the company has done very well, for over 30 significant players are featured. The most notable absentees are The Lion, Nat Cole, Pete Johnson, Jay McShann and Ralph Sutton. In the piano set, the five discs are titled In the Beginning, Bop, Swingers, The Magic Touch and Modern Evolutions. The categorization thus implied is loose, but in the first, for example, there are two titles each by James P. Johnson, Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller, and three each by Earl Hines and Teddy Wilson.

Only 3 left in stock (more on the way). Good collection of piano classics.
