Sylvester preferred to work with straight musicians, he says. Sylvester on stage in London in 1979. Photograph: Max Redfern/Redferns. Cowley threw everything he had at You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real): the frantic, erotic pulse of a synthesised sound that would come to be called hi-NRG, using the outer-space effects he devised for radio.

Anthony David Bernard Sylvester CBE (21 September 1924 – 19 June 2001) was a British art critic and curator. Although he received no formal education in the arts, during his long career he was influential in promoting modern artists, in particular Francis Bacon, Joan Miró and Lucian Freud. Born into a well-connected north-London Jewish family, Sylvester had trouble as a student at University College School and was thrown out of the family home.

Our selection of the test tracks for hearing your speakers at their very best, from Gershwin to Radiohead, Thundercat to Sex Pistols. Not only is this open, spacious and relentlessly hi-fi recording loaded with miniscule details – of von Otter’s phrasing, of her tongue, teeth and palate noises - it also reveals some of the secrets of her breath-management.
