Provided to YouTube by NAXOS of America Prelude for Cello and Piano · Peers Coetmore Moeran: Cello Concerto, Cello Sonata & Prelude ℗ 2007 Lyrita Released.
The three works heard on this Lyrita album stem from his unhappy marriage to cellist Peers Coetmore and are considered by some to be among his strongest works. The liner notes even claim that Moeran's Cello Concerto is "one of the most successful twentieth century cello concertos," although this claim is certainly unsubstantiated. Coetmore is the soloist on this album, appearing with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Adrian Boult. Unfortunately, no aspect of this album does any favors for the obscurity of Moeran's works.

In the late 1940s Moeran met and became enamored of the cellist Peers Coetmore (1905 – 1976). He married her in 1945, the year in which he completed the concerto that he had written for her. The somber first movement – designated Moderato – works out the implications of two or three closely related ideas all of them elegiac in character and couched in minor keys. Self points out that the Cello Concerto is as thematically unified as the other large-scale works. The Cello Sonata followed immediately. It belongs to the same topography as the Cello Concerto. In the lustrum after the two large-scale, end-of-the-war works, Moeran managed to create a chamber piece, the Fantasy Quartet (1946) for oboe, violin, viola, and cello, and his last completed orchestral work, the Serenade (1948), a six-movement pastiche of Elizabethan dance music.
