The only slightly less magnificent 1942 recording of Beethoven's String Quartet F major, Op. 59/1, has almost always been in print in one form or another since it was first released and is well known to longtime chamber music fans. But the premiere release of the E minor recording should be heard by anyone who loves great art.
The String Quartet No. 8, in E minor, Op. 59, No. 2, was written by Ludwig van Beethoven and published in 1808. This work is the second of three of his "Razumovsky" cycle of string quartets, and is a product of his "middle" period. It is in four movements: Allegro, 68, E minor. Molto adagio (Si tratta questo pezzo con molto di sentimento),, E major. Allegretto (with the second section marked Maggiore – Theme russe), 34, E minor – E major – E minor. Presto,, C major – E minor.
