Tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman loved England and he particularly enjoyed playing with the British Dixieland/swing ensemble led by trumpeter Alex Welsh. This live set, released for the first time in 2003, is full of happy spirits, exciting solos, and stimulating ensembles. After the Welsh septet plays "I Ain't Got Nobody," Freeman is featured both with the group and with just the rhythm section

Bud Freeman: American jazz musician, bandleader, and composer, known mainly for playing the tenor saxophone, but also able at the clarinet. He had a smooth and full tenor sax style with a heavy robust swing. He was one of the most influential and important jazz tenor saxophonists of the big band era. The Alex Welsh Band was the premier Chicago style band in the UK as evidenced by the visiting American musicians who wanted to play with it. Alex himself was prepared to take a backseat, letting his first class sidesmen hog the limelight. John Barnes, a superb reedman even today, plays baritone as a perfect foil to Freeman's tenor. Roy Williams was on his way to becoming the world class musician he is today and this CD shows why. The sublime Fred Hunt is on piano. This is quality British Jazz.
