Waltraud Meier, Plácido Domingo, René Pape, Soile Isokoski, Werner Güra; German State Opera Chorus, Berlin Barenboim. Consistency and coherence are the hallmarks of Barenboim’s traditionalist Fidelio, a slap in the face to authenticists and their kind, but a triumphant vindication of Beethoven’s oft-maligned musico-dramatic vision. Meier must indeed be the most accomplished Leonore for many years, finding no apparent rupture between the proto-Wagnerian rhetoric of ‘Abscheulicher!’ and the almost Gluckian severity of the succeeding ‘Komm, Hoffnung’. As with Domingo’s similarly peerless, aristocratic Florestan – effortlessly despatched – technique and interpretation are indistinguishable.

Daniel Barenboim will inaugurate the Teatro alla Scala’s 2014/15 season on December 7, leading a new production of Beethoven’s Fidelio. Deutsche Grammophon releases Strauss album with Daniel Barenboim, Anna Netrebko, Staatskapelle Berlin. Deutsche Grammophon releases a new recording of Strauss’s Four Last Songs and Ein Heldenleben, recorded live at the Philharmonie Berlin with Daniel Barenboim, Anna Netrebko, and the Staatskapelle Berlin.

Here we get only the music Beethoven composed with no dialogue at all; the text Leonore spoke is printed in the accompanying booklet. I’m not a great fan of spoken dialogue in opera–I admit to always skipping over those endless spiels in Magic Flute–but Fidelio needs dramatic glue to keep it flowing and this presentation makes it seem more like a set of highlights without any. The quality of the soloists varies: Soile Isokoski and Werner Güra make a nice pair of ingenues, with pure tone and nice involvement. Placido Domingo’s Florestan is handsomely sung–almost too Italianately elegant at times–but well thought through, and if not quite on the Jon Vickers level, certainly not terribly far away. The real minus here is Waltraud Meier’s Leonore.

Daniel Barenboim conducts the Staatskapelle Berlin as part of the first Festival Barenboim last summer in Buenos Aires. The festival returns again later this month on July 23 at Centro Cultural Kirchner.
