The 1999 debut by Gilles Coronado's new quartet, Urban Mood is cacophonous jazz-rock fusion in that muscular fashion that the French do so well. Coronado's guitar blends with Guillaume Orti's alto saxophone, Vincent Segal's cello, and Norbert Lucarain's drums in a variety of intriguing ways, the four players improvising collectively or as solos, duos, or trios, each member dropping out or crashing in unexpectedly in a funhouse-mirror version of bebop improvisation

Guitarist Gilles Coronado collaborated with Sclavis in the project Signes Exterieurs with saxophonist Matthieu Metzger and choreographer Mathilde Monnier. Recent projects have included, in addition to his own quartet, work with François Merville, whose album O mago Hermeto paid tribute to the music of Hermeto Pascoal, and collaboration with vibraphonist Benjamin Flament and bagpiper Fraser Fifield  . And when we’re talking about the 2014 quartet album Silk and Salt Melodies, we’re also absorbing a breathtaking culmination of Sclavis’ 39 years in the music business.

One of the salient features of Gilles Coronado is certainly its absolute singularity. Leader of his own group, Urban Mood, here over 20 years, he has traveled all contemporary jazz territories in a perpetual quest for difference, otherness, or alteration of the ambient musical discourse. Its multiple and elective affinities have led with Louis Sclavis but also the collective Hask, and groups of this movement (Thot, Print, and allies overseas Quievrain that are Aka Moon). Shaped like many musicians of this nebula by academies Summer Banff Centre for Fine Arts, in Western Canada, it keeps track.
