Album: Cut the Cake - 1975 - R'n'B/funk/ soul group from Scotland.
Cut the Cake is the third album released by Average White Band, released in 1975. This album's hit title track reached on the Billboard pop singles chart. The follow-up album to the immensely successful AWB in 1974, recording was plagued by creative and artistic differences, with several members of the band walking out of the studio on three occasions. One point of conflict was the band's mourning for original drummer, Robbie McIntosh, who died of a heroin overdose in 1974.

Despite the fact that AWB's members still had McIntosh's death on their minds when they were writing and recording Cut the Cake, this isn't a depressing or consistently melancholy album; far from it. In fact, parts of the album are downright fun, especially up-tempo funk gems like "School Boy Crush," "Groovin' the Night Away" and the hit title song (which made it to number seven on Billboard's R&B singles chart)

The Average White Band formed in 1972 and released their first album, Show Your Hand, the following year. After it failed to break through, the group shortened its name to AWB and released a self-titled album in 1974. This song from that album not only broke through, but became a surprise hit in the US, catapulting AWB to stardom almost overnight. In 2005 they re-recorded "Pick Up The Pieces" along with several other of their older songs for a CD titled Greatest And Latest. The original version of this song has been sampled by a number of rap and hip-hop artists, and has also often been played at sporting events. Intentionally AtrociousSong Writing.

The Average White Band is (L-R). Cliff Lyons - Alto sax, keyboards, vocals. Rob Aries - Keyboard, bass. Whilst a good number of cuts - 'Cut The Cake' and 'Let's Go 'Round Again' to name but two - attracted chart action as hit singles, many other album tracks, like 'Schoolboy Crush' and 'Person to Person' became much sampled and turn-tabled 'rare' grooves. Many more tunes, such as 'Cloudy', 'A Love Of Your Own' and 'Nothing You Can Do' - amongst many others- stand alongside some of the finest soul 'album tracks' ever recorded.
