Chausson: Le Roi Arthus.

Ernest Chausson: Le roi Arthus. Le roi Arthus, lyric drama in 3 acts, Op. 23. 1. Acte I - Prelude - Tableau 1. Armin Jordan.

Chausson had been killed, aged 44, in a cycling accident four years previously and the opera, a lofty post-Wagnerian re-working of Arthurian legend, had occupied a large chunk of his creative life, only to be ignored by French theatres. Many, at the time, identified Chausson with his own hero: in the closing pages, Arthur (Arthus) resigns himself to earthly failure before being borne off to Avalon. A mystic chorus assures him, meanwhile, that his name will forever be associated with "the supreme glory of having believed in the ideal"

Ernest Chausson's Le roi Arthus is an ambitious work based on the legend of King Arthur and his betrayal by Lancelot and Guinevere. It is a work that embodies many striking qualities and is overall deeply impressive, but it is not without problems. Stylistically it is rooted in Wagner (in particular the Wagner of Tristan und Isolde), but Chausson obviously took pains to distance himself as much as possible, and at some points it almost sounds as if he made choices deliberately to avoid becoming a Wagner copy at any cost
