Born in modern day Lvov, Poland, Emanuel Ax moved to Winnipeg, Canada, with his family when he was a young boy. His studies at the Juilliard School were supported by the sponsorship of the Epstein Scholarship Program of the Boys Clubs of America, and he subsequently won the Young Concert Artists Award. This is a fine set of Haydn piano sonatas and concertos, featuring Emanuel Ax in clear digital recordings made between 1988 and 2000. The performances have charm, wit, and sparkle, and Ax gets admirable support from the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra in the concertos. The price is amazingly low, though no notes are included with the set. Alfred Brendel is also a superb alternative in this repertoire.

It was probably this same concerto, in its new revised version, that appeared on Beethoven’s breakout concert in 1800 at the Burgtheater, the same venue where Mozart made history with his piano concertos in the 1780s.
