David Virelles (born 1983) is a Cuban jazz pianist and composer. Virelles was born in Cuba in 1983 and grew up in Santiago. His father is José Aquiles, a singer-songwriter; his mother was a Santiago de Cuba Symphony flautist. Virelles started classical piano studies at the age of seven and heard various forms of Cuban music during his childhood. He met Canadian musician Jane Bunnett in Cuba and she invited him to Toronto. He eventually studied at the University of Toronto and Humber College.

On his album Mbókò, Cuban-born pianist and composer David Virelles takes the folkloric rhythms of Afro-Cuban religious ritual and incorporates them into 21st century music resonating with mystery and meaning. The main title Mbókò can mean fundament or sugar cane or The Voice, not the human voice but The Voice that is believed in Abakuá culture to be the voice of a spirit or spirits.

The musical precedent for David Virelles' Mbókò, the Cuban-born, New York-based pianist leader's debut for ECM, can be found on his stellar 2012 Pi Recordings date, Continuum. That set featured the wellspring of folkloric Afro-Cuban ritual music expressed through modern vanguard jazz. The subtitle of this offering is Sacred Music for Piano, Two Basses, Drum Set and Biankoméko Abakuá. The word "Mbókò" translates as "fundament," "sugar cane," and "the voice," not the human one, but sound itself
