Paul Bley's 1962-63 trio (which only officially came together during a couple of Savoy recording sessions) has long been underrated, partly because half of its recordings were unreleased at the time. The next logical step beyond the Bill Evans Trio, Bley's group with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Pete LaRoca featured the three musicians often functioning as equals during group improvisations that were generally melodic but never too predictable
