Tentatively trying to appear “competent” in a market they were eager to be part, Arch Enemy attempted to write longer songs with Progressive Rock dynamics for their second album Stigmata. With three songs clocking around 7 minutes and two interludes, this album is considered by a good part of their fanbase as their masterpiece, along with Burning Bridges. The Metallica/Judas Priest guitar work is still perceptible, and even a few Metalcore breakdowns are included (“Dark of the Sun” at 1:03 and 2:37 circa). The title track features an overkill of harmonics on the conclusion of its bridge and fourths-based chords. Overall, this is a moderately better album than their debut and their finest hour, but nothing capable of declassing In Flames, Dark Tranquillity or even At the Gates’ respective definitive albums.Highlights: “Beast of Man”, “Black Earth”.
