Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 35 - Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Both the concertos on this disc are of Polish origin and date from the end of the nineteenth century. Beautiful tunes abound, and whilst the music might not be particularly deep, it never fails to please the ear. As might be expected from two composer-pianists, there are ample opportunities for solo pyrotechnics, but there are also moments of extreme beauty: if the Romanza of the Paderewski doesn't melt your heart, nothing will. Paderewski: Concerto for Piano in A minor, Op. 17; Polish Fantasia on original themes Op. Audio CD.

Thursday, January 19, 2012. Paderewski - Piano Concerto in A Minor. Paderewski wanted to be known as a composer as much as a piano virtuoso, perhaps even more so. He had scant little time to compose after his premieres in Vienna and Paris as his popularity skyrocketed. Paderewski's career began in fits and starts with studying composition off and on in Warsaw and Germany. It is followed by a more reverent theme in the orchestra that is ornamented by the piano in its own version. These two themes comprise most of the movement as they are altered and elaborated on each time they are played. A grand coda whips up the virtuosity as the music races to the finish. Paderewski Piano Concerto and Fantasie Polonaise for Piano and Orchestra, surprisingly wonderful. Much the same could be said of the Fantasie Polonaise for Piano and Orchestra, Op 19 that was so appealing to Elgar. It is not difficult to believe that a century ago it was among the most popular works for piano and orchestra in the repertoire. This work is also to be found below. Paderewski wrote only three large scale works for piano. The third was a piano sonata. Although this is a work for solo piano, I include it here for reference and for those who might be interested in hearing it. JESÚS MARÍA SANROMÁ Puerto Rican pianist (1902-1984).
