Scepter, Wand and Musicor have been a staple of the Kent connoisseur’s diet for nearly thirty years, since Jack Montgomery’s ‘Dearly Beloved’ opened the Club Soul Kent LP in 1984. Along with stunning solo compilations from Maxine Brown, Tommy Hunt, Chuck Jackson and the Shirelles there have been about a dozen LP and CD compilations of all the great artists who didn’t have enough tracks for solo albums. These varied from out-and-out Northern Soul, to big city ballads, to Southern Soul to Modern and funk.

Scepter/Wand and Musicor/Dynamo records were quintessential New York soul labels. He split for Musicor in 1966 where he got the Platters, Tommy Hunt and Inez & Charlie Foxx back into the charts. Scepter/Wand had the bigger black music catalogue and dominates this compilation

label Kent remembers these artists and the music they’ve left behind with the new release of Manhattan Soul: Scepter, Wand and Musicor (Ace/Kent CD KEND 347), exploring the vaults of Greenberg’s labels as well as Aaron Schroeder’s Musicor, the home of Gene Pitney and also based at 1650. Opening a Kent anthology is often like discovering a long-hidden treasure chest, and this compilation is no exception

Various artists: manhattan soul 3 (kent). This compilation is the ninth of Scepter/Wand and Musicor/Dynamo recordings issued by Kent, and the standard never slips. So, the resulting compilation covers most musical genres, for instance I’m listening to Johnny Moore’s Haven’t I Been Good To You which, for the world, sounds like The Temptations’ I Know I’m Losing You.

Manhattan Soul 3 by Various Artists Audio CD £1. 1. Only 5 left in stock (more on the way). Further quality soul sides from the New York labels that we know and love, Scepter, Wand and Musicor. Unissued gems come from the great Jimmy Radcliffe with his reading of the big city soul classic Deep In The Heart Of Harlem ; a previously-unheard vocal version of Benny Gordon and the Soul Brothers instrumental Horsin Around ; and an early soul shouter from the intriguingly named Lois Lane.
