Midnight- Hallelujah - Jonatha Brooke - -. Terms of Service. Artist: Jonatha Brooke. Title track from my new record MIDNIGHT. Has been played on.

It's a return to stand-alone original material after a companion LP to her own musical play (My Mother Has 4 Noses) and an album of tunes set to the lyrics of Woody Guthrie (The Works). The record takes on types of beliefs and devotion not necessarily religious, as evidenced in titles like "Nothing Hurts Like Love Hurts" and "Put the Gun Down," a song that begs for cooler heads.

Artist: Jonatha Brooke Title: Midnight. is Brooke’s first radio release since The Works in 2008. But don’t think she was taking it easy in the meantime. She is currently working on a new original musical with playwright Geoffrey Nauffts.

Continuing to mature as a singer and songwriter, Jonatha Brooke again puts remarkably good music to exciting, challenging lyrics. I’m now on about my 30th listen, and Midnight Hallelujah is a success on every measure. This CD delivers on her best skills from her large body of work, including extending the intimate storytelling from "The Works" and "Four Noses" through "Light Years," "Too Much Happiness" and several other selections here. And there’s plenty of punch, too. The CD kicks us right in the face from the start, yelling out "Put the gun down!" Wow. The playful and exuberant “Really Really Love” is so different and joyous! FUN!! And “Mean Looking Jesus”... Oy! Where in god’s name did that come from?! Almost blew my speakers out. Lyrically, the title track is as good as she's ever delivered, and if you are a fan, that’s high praise. I have been in similar situations with someone important but never could vocalize as she does, exclaiming, "Be my midnight hallelujah, be my 2 a.m. Amen!" Stunning. Background vocals are exceptionally beautiful throughout, as we’ve come to expect from this talented artist, supporting her strong and getting stronger voice. “You and I” serves as a perfect example. And the tasteful use of strings, winds, keyboards, the bass… this instrumentation is spectacular. Adding to what we hear, the production is absolutely superb. As she informed us in her ongoing commentary on the production of this work, the band, the engineers, etc.; all were amazing partners and contributors. She has come so far, even from the high marks of her previous work. Every song, EVERY song has personality and stick-in-your-brain melody. I am admitting that I am a full-on fan. Have been from The Story and her first solo releases many years ago. Now I admire this poet, composer, singer, actress and musician all the more. Does she provide us with acoustic rock, electric folk or something not quite named… well, whatever Jonatha does, she does it Really Really well! Thanks for another brilliant release, Ms. Brooke. Wish there were another 11 songs on this disc.
