About Beware of the Dogs. On the title track of her debut album, Stella Donnelly widens the scope of her storytelling to a broader, but no less pressing issue – the cultural and environmental destruction of Australia by its own government. What have the artists said about the song? It’s about Australian identity and what that actually means for me, as an Anglo, white Australian, and how my experience of this country can differ so much from somebody else’s based on that privilege. It also looks at the people in power, who have all the money and protect it at the expense of others

The earrings are comprised of layers of laser cut perspex and feature lips and noodle motif. They have sterling silver ear wires for pierced ears and are handmade in our London studio. Each pair is engraved with Stella Donnelly x Jennifer Loiselle on the back.
On Beware of the Dogs, her first full-length, a more robust picture emerges. Her songs are complex and surprising, full of sharp corners poised to bruise unsuspecting limbs. Trading in humor as well as gravitas, they are often pulled taut with genuine pain and then snapped with a well-placed punch line. This sort of irony is the crux of Donnelly’s songwriting. It inserts a consistent point of view across an album whose songs range considerably in scope, at times contracting around the singer’s idle thoughts, at others expanding to bigger sociopolitical topics. Donnelly loves the element of surprise so much she’s built it right into the track list, writing songs that demolish the expectations set by their titles-like Die, an upbeat take on a crumbling relationship that likens a partner’s inconsistency to errant driving, and ends with Donnelly gleefully chanting, I don’t wanna die!
The Good: Beware of the Dogs shines in its concrete approaches to meaningful subject matter. Most markedly, Donnelly’s exasperation with the patriarchy bobs to the surface regularly across the album’s 13-track span; even in the moments when it’s not directly articulated, we feel the way that it informs everything, much like in day-to-day life. Anthems like Old Man and Boys Will Be Boys make it explicit, while in other areas, like Watching Telly, it takes on a more sorrowful edge. There is no strict ending in sight to some of the issues Donnelly spends the album addressing, which perhaps makes the sometime aversion to neatness a fitting approach. The Verdict: The title of this debut album may be Beware of the Dogs, but make no mistake: The real enemy of the season, at the risk of oversimplifying the message a bit, is men.

Her first full-length album, ‘Beware of the Dogs, is a natural evolution of this sound. This time around, though her acoustic guitar is complemented by kinetic electric riffs and pulsing drums. On ‘Mosquito’, Donnelly’s voice is backed by gorgeous harmonies and ethereal, trickling synth lines; ‘Season’s Greetings’ is a bright, full band tune stuffed with intricate details and fizzing hooks. But as with anything Donnelly puts out, the true brilliance is in her poignant lyrics. The album’s opener, the razor-sharp ‘Old Man’, sees Donnelly takedown the patriarchy over an indie-folk riff: Oh, are.
