This album, which features John Fedchock & which was grammy nominated, is one of the best big band jazz albums you can have in your collection. So tight, so dynamic, they swing with the best of them. It kicks off with a churning blast on an obscure Ellington piece from Newport 1958 called & Bone. The band later takes on the more famous & Air Shaft' with astounding brio and really makes it shake. All other material is equally rewarding.

When amel and iehancock met at the crossroads of jazz and classical music in a concert dedicated to American composer George Gershwin.

Cool jazz enters the scene. Chamber jazz and the Modern Jazz Quartet. Jazz meets classical and the third stream begins. The mainstream enlarged: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and others. The first signs of these fresh musical sounds could be heard as early as 1941, particularly in works by such composer-arrangers as Buster Harding, Neal Hefti, Gerry Valentine, and Budd Johnson. Especially explorative and prophetic are such pieces as The Moose (1943; by Ralph Burns for the Charlie Barnet band), Shady Lady (1942; by Andy Gibson for Barnet), and To a Broadway Rose and ’S Wonderful (1941 and 1944, respectively; both by Ray Conniff for Artie Shaw).
