The leads-Victoria de Los Angeles and Jussi Björling-would make it special in any case. But Robert Merrill is excellent and Lucine Amara is a light-voiced, French-sounding, ultra-stylish Musetta. This is the Beecham version with Victoria de los Angeles and Jussi Bjorling. In my opinion, no other version can top this one, (and I own about 15 complete versions of Boheme myself). The final scene from Mimi's 'Sono andate' to Rodolfo's sobbing 'Mimi' could make a stone weep!
Upcoming Performances. At first glance, La Bohème is the definitive depiction of the joys and sorrows of love and loss; on closer inspection, it reveals the deep emotional significance hidden in the trivial things-a bonnet, an old overcoat, a chance meeting with a neighbor-that make up our everyday lives. Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) was immensely popular in his own lifetime, and his mature works remain staples in the repertory of most of the world’s opera companies. The Gershwins’ beloved jazz masterpiece returns to the Met after nearly 30 years, with a dazzling new production by James Robinson and Angel Blue and Eric Owens in the title roles.
