Works Volume 1, is the fifth studio album by the English progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released as a double album in March 1977 on Atlantic Records. Following their successful 1974 world tour, the group took a break from recording and touring. They relocated to Montreux, Switzerland and Paris, France to record a new album. Each member was allocated one side of a record to write and arrange their own tracks which were performed by the group

Though no one talked about it at the time of its release, this album reflected a growing split within the group. Originally, the trio's members, tired of sublimating their musical identities within the context of ELP, each intended to do a solo album of his own. Reason prevailed, however, probably aided by the group's awareness that the combined sales of the solo albums issued by the five members of Yes the previous year were a fraction of the sales of Yes ' most recent records

First of all, what needs to be said before anything else is that Works Volume 1 is NOT for those who enjoy Emerson, Lake & Palmer's early 70's stuff. This entire album is dominated with London Symphony Orchestra arrangements which paints a completely different picture of the band. It's drastically different from their 1970-74 classic period. It's not a great song, though the solo album, "Greg Lake", is probably better than "Works Vol 1" overall. The other songs are forgettable and dismissable. Carl Palmer's side is eclectic and contains two good moments.

3 1/2 years after their defining album "Brain Salad Surgery", a huge world tour that pegged them as one of the top progressive rock acts ever, and an extended hiatus saw the musical landscape change in the band's absence, ELP unleashes their comeback album "Works." Although it sold well, charting high in both the US and UK, one listen will tell you all you need to know about how the group members felt about the collaborate process that drove the band during its classic era. Choosing to have each member contribute a solo side marked the disunity that had crept in, and this album is a disjointed and awkward listening experience that is both pleasant and frustrating. The solo sides, of course, bear no resemblance to the traditional ELP sound.Keith Emerson offers the three-part neo-classical "Piano Concerto No. 1," a piece that is well-developed but as unremarkable as its title. Emerson is still as sharp on the keys as he's ever been, but be aware that the music here is purely symphonic and not rock. Greg Lake offers five acoustic folk-style ballads, also with orchestral accompaniment. While his five tracks are good, they may have been better served with Emerson's organs and synthesizers instead of the orchestra.Carl Palmer's contributions are surprisingly excellent, choosing wisely to show off composition skills rather than presenting 20 minutes of drum solos. His tunes actually rock! Thanks to an assist on one track by Joe Walsh; however, the remake of "Tank" is superfluous.The two band performances close out the set. "Fanfare for the Common Man" is actually a modal piece using Copland's familiar theme as a framing device; it's one of ELP's best-ever classical adaptations and would remain with the band's live sets for the rest of their career. "Pirates" is a dense operetta-like piece written around an unused score by Emerson.While "Works" is still a fine album and a worthwhile entry in the band's catalog, it's every bit a representation of the indulgences and pretense of the band, and one of prog-rock's most impenetrable albums. And while it showed that the old magic was there, thanks to the emerging punk scene, the band's glory days were behind them.
After a three year absence, the '70s favourite musical talent indulgers re-emerged......right as punk was exploding. So naturally Keith, Greg and Carl took a stripped-down approach, five songs each on two sides of vinyl, none of them lasting any longer than four minutes.HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, of course not. Bands such as ELP, Yes and Pink Floyd certainly didn't have to abandon their identities in the face of new musical trends, but my goodness this was a bold move at that of all times: double album, a side for each individual member of the group, the first of which being Emerson's eighteen minute 'Piano Concerto No. 1'. It's still prog 'n' roll to them, dammit!It must be said, ELP's audience certainly hadn't lost their appetite for the trio's eventual comeback, as Works Volume 1 reached the top ten of the British charts and the top 15 in the United States. Most ironically of all the final, full group side of the album gave them a huge hit: a heavily shortened version of Emerson's instrumental 'Fanfare For The Common Man' arrangement got to number two in their native U.K., where the punk explosion was at by far its strongest. Life's full of strange surprises. Sadly, whatever money they may have earned from 'Fanfare' or Works 1 was largely squandered on the supporting tour, despite playing to stadiums across North America, mostly due to the vast expense of a full-scale orchestra and choir. During the summer of 1977, at Sex Pistols gigs, Johnny Rotten would wear a t-shirt that sported a...let's say, not very flattering message directed at ELP. Unfortunately, there were moments where they seemed intent on proving Rotten's slogan correct...
Works is the album that signaled the decline of ELP from their first classic rock albums, the heights to which the band would never reach again. However, it didn't have to be this way. The band had enough music in the can and on this album to release another classic album. The band's effort to showcase each member's instrumental prowess, however, led to a lot of instrumental virtuosity, but little that appeals to rock fans. Keith Emerson's and Carl Palmer's sides are boring. Greg Lake's songs are better, but lack the band's stylistic variety. The group's work (originally on side four) is up to their usual high standard. Works, Volume 2 was a totally different sort of album, collecting leftovers from other albums, some excellent, some not. In this day of iTunes, however, we no longer have to accept inferior collections and can assemble our own. The following would provide an excellent overview of the three albums that make up the Works ensemble and provide a listening experience on par with ELP's first five albums: Fanfare for the Common Man, C'est la Vie, Brain Salad Surgery, Lend your Love to me Tonight, When the Apple Blossoms...,, , Closer to Believing, Tiger in the Spotlight, Watching over you, Pirates, I believe in Father Christmas.
