Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5, Yutaka Sado, conductor · Berliner Philharmoniker .

Profoundly sad, the symphony conveys an indomitable spirit and remains his most popular.

Angular Brooding Dark Flashy Ironic Lyrical Melancholy Quirky Sarcastic Somber Thoughtful Tragic Triumphant. Semyon Bychkov, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Semyon Bychkov must be the darkest horse in the race among great conductors. Even though he was reguarly leading the Berlin Phil. before he turned thirty and toured with the orchestra at their invitation, I doubt that many Americans know his name outside Buffalo, whose orchestra he led after his initial, meteoric rise. He had a major recording contract with Philips, who clearly believed he was the Next Thing. The Shostakovich fifth symphony is a bombastic treat, but one which also requires an understanding interpretation. At his worst, Shostakovich could be corny and self-derivative, but at his best, which this symphony is, he could expand your brane and blow the windows out. Semyon Bychkov understands this work, and he finds the wide emotional swings and the drama in it as well as the bombast.

I too enjoy discussing Shostakovich - particularly the symphonies. Liking Shostakovich so much, I really SHOULD like the fifth more than I do- but for some inexplicable (and unforgivable?) reason, it doesn't resonate with me; except for the last movement. I'm pretty Switzerland otherwise.

This recording is what I use to test audio systems. It's beautifully done with very precise intonation and dynamics. I highly recommend this recording.
