Last month the star seemed as if it "had something to tell" the poet. Whitman imagines that the star was full of woe "as the night advanced" until it vanished "in the netherward black of the night. Whitman calls upon the bird to continue singing. The poet remembers that one day while he sat in the peaceful but "unconscious scenery of my land," a cloud with a "long black trail" appeared and enveloped everything. Suddenly he "knew death. Album Bloom – EP. Bloom Lyrics. In the morning when I wake And the sun is coming through Oh, you fill my lungs with sweetness And you fill my head with you Shall I write it in a letter? Shall I try to get it down? Oh, you fill my head with pieces Of a song I can't get out. Can I be close to you? Ooh-oo-oo-ooh, ooh-oo-oo-ooh Can I be close to you? Ooh-oo-oo-ooh, ooh-oo-oo-ooh. Can I take you to a moment Where the fields are painted gold? And the trees are filled with memories Of the feelings never told? When the evening pulls the sun down And the day is almost.

Walt Whitman definitely seemed to think so, which explains his poem, "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd," first published in 1865 (not coincidentally the same year that Lincoln was assassinated). Whitman really loved the guy and had no qualms about voicing that love. So you can imagine that, when he got word of his hero's symbolized in the poem as a "great star disappear'd"-the guy couldn't help but turn his grief into one of the most talked about elegies of American history
