The Brand New Heavies are an acid jazz and funk group formed in 1985 in Ealing in west London. Centered around strumentalists Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy, the core members of the group since its founding, Brand New Heavies are best known for a string of successful singles in the early 1990s featuring N'Dea Davenport as lead vocalist. The Brand New Heavies began in the 1980s as an instrumental acid jazz group called Brothers International.

The Brand New Heavies, whose debut album hit stores in 1990, have truly stood the test of time. The eleven tracks featured on the quartet's tenth studio album Sweet Freaks are just the latest proof of that full of irresistible grooves, well thought-out melodies and as much lively energy and enthusiasm as on any of their highly successful early outings. Everything came together in a comparable short time span of less than four months. And that included writing, arranging, recording, as well as mixing the entire disc by themselves

The Brand New Heavies bridge the gap between disco and funk better than anyone outside of Jamiroquai. This album is slick and syrupy and sweet and the perfect companion for a percussionist (like me) to jam along with. Dawn Joseph doesn't have the throaty pipes that N'Dea Davenport brought to the Heavies, which gave their earlier albums a bit more edge, but she is a fine replacement, none-the-less. If I have any criticisms, it's in Jan Kincaid's flat vocals, but he doesn't sing much and fits in well when singing background.
